AICE Biology Cancer Webquest

Open the Web Quest: Cancer (MS Word file) document.
Type your names & class period at the top of the document.
Rename the document Cancer_YourName_period.
Save the document to your my documents folder.
You will also want to place a copy in Ms. Evans folder in the student Drop Box.

While doing your research below, you will need to answer the questions, and write the letter at the end, in that MSWord document. Be very careful to avoid plagarism. No Credit will be given for answers that were copied & pasted from the web sites. Read the information and use your own words to answer the questions.

Open Internet Explorer and go to the University of Pennsylaina Oncolink website.

Click on Types of Cancer at the top of the Left sidebar.

1. Select one type of cancer that you would like to learn about. Read through the information given to find the answers to the questions listed below. After looking at the information from the type of cancer that you select, describe what cancer is in general terms under #1 in your MSWord document. Then give specific answers to these questions.

A. The name/type of cancer you selected.
B. What areas of the body are affected by this type of cancer?
C. Who usually gets this cancer and/or what makes you at risk to get it.
D. What causes this type of cancer?
E. What are the most common symptoms?.
F. How are patients screened for this cancer?
G. How is this cancer diagnosed?
H. What are the stages / grades of the cancer?
I. What are the treatment options and likely prognosis for the cancer?
J. Are there any after treatment recommendations for patients?
K. What research is currently being conducted on this type of cancer?

Now go to the National Cancer Institute website.

2. Compare the following treatment types by explaining what each treatment type is and how it is the same or different from the other types of treatment.

A. Chemotherapy
B. Radiation therapy
C. Surgery
D. Any one of the Other Treatment Methods

3. Go back to the cancer you researched at the Oncolink site (Step 1 of this assignment) and compare the information at this National Cancer Institut site with what you found there. Number this answer #3.

Go to the American Cancer Society website.
4. Explore this site then answer the following questions.

A. What support is available for teenagers with cancer?
B Read one story of hope and explain how that story provides hope for cancer patients or their families.

5. Write a one-page letter to a friend who has just been diagnosed with cancer. This friend was so terrified when the doctor said cancer, that (s)he ran from the doctor’s office without listening to any of the doctor’s explanation. In this letter you must:

A. Express your concern for your friend.
B. Explain what cancer is so he/she can understand it.
C. General treatment options.
D. One suggestion you have for your friend.

6. Proofread and print your answers and your letter.


This whole assignment is due at the end of the second day of your time in the lab. Turn it in by saving a copy in the student drop box in the folder for Ms. Evans.
